1976 spitfire,starts and idles beautifully, drives for a few minutes then hesitates ,sputters and wants to stall,manages to keep running on cutch and gas in 1st gear, then suddenly roars into life as though nothing was wrong drives normally for another while before repeating the whole episode over again.Any suggestions appreciated

It sounds very much like fuel starvation, what carbs? on SUs the needle valves can stick closed so that carb runs out of fuel and you run on 2 and abit untill the vibration opent the valve and off you go.
