The head gasket can be blown out between the two cylinder without dumping water into the oil pan. when you remove the head check the gasket you will see that the gasket is week in the middle between the two cylinders. no matter what you should go ahead and do a valve job and make sure you have the head shaved to enforce the sealing of the gasket.
