It may actually be a simple fix. There are generally 2 screws at the top of the unit that hold it in place you may have to also adjust the front legs down. The whole unit should slide out a little without having to unhook anything. If it is a copper pipe that feeds it be care full not to pull too hard and kink it. but there are usually springs on either side of the door with multiple slots to hook on (you'll know it when you see it) just pull it up to the next slot. As far as the lifespan goes if you have an old one that works keep it. the newer ones are not built nearly as well unless you pay top dollar. Even then it is still a plastic dishwasher. On the other hand the new ones a very quiet compared to the older steel tub machines.
