1996 Mercury Villager starting jerking and lost power
While driving the van jerked and then lost power. I turned it off and restarted the van then it drove several miles and jerked again then lost power and the temperature gauge had risen 3/4 of the way to hot.
What can it be?

I know this is an old posting but I think lots of these Villagers behave the same way as they age. It also depends on the miles. The computer programming in the early Villagers seemed to be a little on the crappy side when sensors go bad. The first free easy thing to do is disconnect the vacuum feed line for the EGR. The hose connects to a port just behind the throttle return spring. Just put another plugged hose there in its place and leave the factory vacuum line to dangle there. If things get better then call it fixed if you want otherwise start replacing EGR system parts. Next just down from the air cleaner is the Air flow sensor. Just pop off the air cleaner and see that the screen in front of the aluminum sensor housing is clean but I doubt that's causing the issue described. The computer will set a MAF sensor error if the actual sensor has crapped out. Next, the oxygen sensor does not necessarily set a code when it has failed. If your sensor has been in there for more than 4 or 5 years then replace it. If things improve then fine. The throttle position sensor won't necessarily set a code either but it can be seen in action with a scanner tool.
Another free easy thing to do is just disconnect the front oxygen sensor and leave it disconnected. The computer sets the check engine light and uses a constant setting in place of readings from the sensor. Not having to run the sensor and figure the calculations makes for a more stable air fuel ratio so the engine won't buck so much though it may still surge while trying to return to idle. Forget the IAC. It may be doing what it is told. Adjust the throttle stop screw near the throttle spring for a little more speed because the CPU just doesn't seem to be responding fast enough to adjust the IAC properly.
I would check fuel pump pressure first. It should be 40 psi. Fuel pump may be going.
Also, clean MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner or carb cleaner several times. It gets coated with varnish and leans out the fuel mxture.
Check optical sensor under slotted wheel under distributor cap. If brown dust, the distributor bearing is going. You will need new distributor. ebay $200.
go here and read files and messages on your issue.
