Subs quit when i turn it up some. but come back on when i turn it back down. should go wayyyyy louder

It is possible that you are not providing enough current to the amp. It will go into protect mode if the current sags. What do you have running as a power cable. And also, your ground should be just as big and bonded very well to the body.
