2". When the volume is turned up, they distort quite a bit. Was expecting better sound quality from these speakers. Someone mentioned that it could be due to the headunit not being powerful enough. I have a factory cassette player headunit, which probably puts out low wattage. If I replace the headunit (to maybe one with 50 x 4 watts) would this improve the sound and possibly stop distortion at higher volumes? Thanks

YOU WOULD DEFINITELY NEED MORE POWER FOR DOES SPEAKERS . WHAT YPU SHOULD UNDERSTAND IS ONCE YOU HAVE AN AMP. THAT RATES HIGHER THAN YOUR SPEAKERS U WOULD ALWAYS HAVE GOOD SOUND RESULTS BECAUSE U DONT HAVE TO MAX OUT YOUR AMP VOLUME .
Upgrade...... definitly a wattage problem... most units today will have rc outputs i would suggest spending the extra 50 and get a unit with dual rca's and invest in a small 100 watt amp to run your highs this will prevent any future distortion as well as prevent you from putting undue load on your stereo; hince longer performance and clarity from your head unit
I would definitely say yes to the new HU, however at the same, the issue could be the actual wiring from the deck to the speakers. If you've got a cassette player in there I'm assuming the vehicle is a bit older. Over time the copper in the wiring has a tendency to corrode if exposed to the weather. Either way replacing the player is a win-win situation since you'd be stepping into the CD era (lol), but if it doesn't make a difference I would be looking towards the wiring. Outside of that the only possible wild card would be you bought faulty speakers, the odds of that being very low since it's coming from both. Hope this helps.
