If it's a straight shift, check the button on the clutch pedal. There may be on for the brake too. These will disengage the cruise when you press the pedal. If they arent operating properly, it could prevent the cruise from even working.
Remove the top plastic engine cover- 4 small bolts inspect throttle assembly. There should be a container ring/wall so the cruise cable cant jump out of the thing-sideways if that's broken -there is your problem. It has been a common problem
