2012 Wont start, cleaned carb\ jets took cover off air box to charge battery tryed to start with cover off but lots of exhaust smoke belching out of air box! Any help please got told might be rings?

If this a 2 stroke I would think ,blocked exhaust system
It could be a ring problem but a compression test will check that
to give you insight into my reply
2 strokes suck in the mixture as the piston moves up . that mixture is stored in the crankcase and as the piston moves down that mixture is compressed until the piston passes a bypass port at which time the piston starts to move back up for the compression /firing stroke
as it moves up another lot of mixture is sucked into the crankcase and the procedure is repeated
if there is a blockage in the exhaust side then that burnt mixture renters the cylinder and escapes back past the bypass port into the crankcase and out the carby
which is what you are describing
to further add to the statement ,if the crankcase seals on the crankshaft or worn or faulty , 2 stroke engines are hard to start because the up stroke sucks in air past the seals ans the down stroke pushes the air /mixture out past the seals ,hence nothing gets to the top of the piston to spark and ignite
