Updating the BIOS could be the solution, but, let's leave that until last - if you get it wrong, you'll stuff up your machine (mobo) for good.
Don't worry about the CMOS jumper, it is there to clear the CMOS memory, but I don't think you need to do that.
Can you get into your BIOS during start up OK? (usually by hitting F8, F2, Del one of these keys or similar during start up, it should tell you which).
If you can navigate your way through the BIOS settings ok, don't change anything you're not familiar with - another place you can do damage, and somewhere towards the end, where you have to option to exit BIOS with or without saving there should be another option like "Reset Defaults" or "Load Optimal Settings" or "Set Last best Settings" or something like that.
Click on this then exit your BIOS. Your computer should restart.
Make sure your new memory battery you put in is up the right way, if it's upside down it could be causing a short - the usual way is positive up, that's the whole flat face with the writing on it - the insulated button side is negative (down).
