You most likely have a sending unit inside the fuel tank that is going bad. It takes a little testing to determine if this is indeed the problem but I would say odds are about 90% that it is. If you do discover that the sender is bad and decide to replace it I would also replace the fuel pump at the same time. Some of these senders are sold only as part of the pump module so you might end up with both anyhow. Even if they are sold seperately I would still replace the pump, especially if you are near the 100k mile mark.
