4 HP motor installed on my porch chairlift that has stopped working. The motor only hums when you push the up or down button. After removing the motor it spins freely and will run but has no balls at all. It's not running to full speed and I can stop it with my hand. Do you think the problem is with the run capacitor?Paul M

It is possible that the start/run winding is open cicuit or cable connections via the capacitor you mentioned , is it distorted , any sign or leakage . as it is on a stair lift the motor has to be reversed , is the reversing switch intact.
