4 inch out before it won't come off any further. I'm obviously missing some vital piece of information but I can't see to find any information anywhere. Any ideas? Thanks!

Did you take the allen screw all the way out? It has a sharp point on it and will get stuck in the slot, Once you get the handle off, the rosette is threaded on, and the threaded part is screwed on to the door, you don't have to mess with that, or the threaded part either. Pull the knob out the other side, It should be split in the middle? One side turns, the other doesn't and vice versa. Pull out the bolt, 2 screws in the edge of the door, it has to be either, broken, wore out or just dirty from wear and tear. The spring in those things is strong, strong enough to lift the lever up and keep it level. I have seen them weaken and break, also stop working from metal shavings in there. A drop of oil might work wonders, you will have to get it out and check it out. Now,, that is not for a mortise lock, It is for a basic passage leverset, by Baldwin. If your lock is fancier than that, let me know. Hope this helps.
OK, Did you get the screw out? Is there a screw on the other side? Did you get the handle off? Is it a bolt type leverset? Not a mortise lock? Is the bolt split in the middle? Or did both handles move at the same time? If you get the screw out of the bottom on the lever, it should pull off, I don't think it is threaded, some were. Both levers should pull out. If they are worn, they might need a little umph. You might have to take the rosette off so you can peek in there to see whats going on, try pushing the plunger in and pulling at the same time.
Hello. Get a can of WD-40 penetrating lubricant with a tiny application tube attached. Squirt some into the latch on the edge of the door and let it work for an hour. Try the door. then apply a little to both sides of the handle. Reappy as needed. Joe
