If you bought this board brand new, take it back and tell them the sata controllers in the bois are not sufficent and get one that is. If you got it second hand then you will need to update or flash the bios to the latest version. see if that works and the drive is recognised. if it is recognised via flash/update you may still run into problems if you try to install XP good luck and regards
shouldn't make any difference, the board is supposed to support sata 2 and doesn't, try to clear the cmos with the drive plugged in, that should set it back to defaults, also have a look in the bios settings, in some boards you have to enable the sata controllers yourself, if this does not work then its a bios flash or you will have to get a ATA/IDE drive instead if the board supports it
