Hold on to the threads behind the presser foot and hand walk the first two or three stitches.

Some like to use a leader/spider.

Fold a scrap and stitch to the edge and then **** with the fabric you want to sew.

Remove the leader and use over and over and soon the leader threads will resemble a "spider".
