'87 Audi 4000 Quattro - vacuum advance problems
Ok, I've got an '87 Audi 4000 Quattro, and I love the damn thing. Had it forever, and have had a lot of good break-down stories. Anyway, I'm having trouble with the car when I'm running down the road, it has been bucking a little and running out of balls, to the point where I'm just gimping along. I went through, made sure I had a good fuel pump (Bosch, it's sweet and expensive) new fuel filter, air filter, and wires/plugs. No appreciable change in the problem. So, I figured it was probably a distributor problem. So I went ahead and did a new cap and rotor, and noticed that my vac unit is bad. The problem is BETTER, but not fixed. I'm pulling real strong to 4000 RPM, and then it just sorta hangs there....the motor makes noise but there's no power surge. So, I THINK that's the problem, my timing's not quite right due to the bad vac. Am I on the right track? I've posted classifieds on the 4000/5000 boards. I need one. Thanks guys.

On the vacuum line that operates the advance on the dizzy, there is a plastic piece that controls the upshift light, it has a two terminal connector and an adjusting screw on one side. Today I bypassed this piece, my car revs willingly past th 4000 mark and continues to build power. I assume this piece or the small hose it uses was leaking. Sweet.
