A black square appeared in the upper left corner of the screen. It goes away when show info is activated or when in the guide,but returns when info is cleared or exit guide

Sounds like a software corruption in the TV. Most of the late 2000 flat panel TV have upgradeable software that can be downloaded by USB memory stick. Check the LG web site for software upgrades. This should be a free download by LG.
