One method is to bare the ends of the individual wires, and lay the cables side by side.
Don't worry about uneven lengths, just as long as you can get the appropriate wires together.
Solder or even twist them together, and tape each connection to prevent them shorting out.
Heatshrink tube is great here if you have any. It males a tidier repair.
Now tape together the paired cables for about an inch, then lay out the cable so it is straight and bend up the join to lay along it and tape it there.
This prevents strain on the joins.
I don't know about a wire wheel, it might not be delicate enough for this application, but thank you, I'll remember it and try it sometime.
