ABS break problem
Hi I have a 2002 SC2 coupe only 53,000 mile on it.I am having a ABS problem. When I step on my brakes slightly to stop I hear a loud vibration sound I also feel the vibration threw the break pedal.I had my done last year at saturn and I good with breaks they lasted me 5 years.I started having the problem about 2 or 3 months later.I needed a oil change so I ask them about it and they checked them at saturn and they said that it's normal and the sound I am hearing is the ABS coming on.I never heard this sound before when I bought it brand new.All of sudden when I got my breaks done this has happened. It's is getting worse now and sometimes the ABS light comes on once in awhile. When it comes on for a few seconds the noise stops then when the light went off the noise started again I am worried that I am hurting my car and the saturn dealer said the breaks were okay. The abs light has not come on since I owned the car until now,Do know what I can do?Do know what is causing this?Thank you very much Scott

Hi Scott,
I've recently had the same exact problem. On my 2002 Saturn SC2, with 57k. I had new tires installed and after having them on, when I'm braking... and am near a complete stop and am stepping on pedal slightly... the car makes a loud vibrating noise that I can feel through the car. When I took it into Firestone (I did not believe my brakes were going to be an issue... but it had to do something with the ABS)... they had suggested I can use new brakes. Knowing that this was not the case... I decided against it and decided to check the web for solutions. I was wondering if you had found anything that works?
Thanks,
Mike
You're absolutely right, it's not normal and in my opinion your Saturn dealer is lazy, incompetent, or both. At the very least it's indicative of how little they value you as a customer.
Your problem is almost certainly due to cracked or corroded ABS reluctor rings. Just do an online search on those three words and you'll see what I'm on about. Get a competent mechanic to check them for you promptly as it is a critical safety issue. On some brands the rings only come as part of a complete drive shaft or hub assembly, but there are usually third party suppliers who sell the rings separately. Usually they're a tight interference fit and must be heated until red hot before slipping them onto the drive shaft/hub. If not the rings, then it may be one or more of the sensors that operate in conjunction with the reluctors.
Please note that the advice I have given is generic to almost all ABS equipped cars; I can't be specific to Saturn as I live in Europe (UK) and Saturns aren't sold on our side of the pond.
I hope that you have found my reply to be of use, please take a moment to rate my answer.
