After approx 16 uses, I removed it from the window & stored in at the bottom of my closet. When I installed it the following summer, the unit wouldn't turn on. I checked the power etc, all fine. What could possibly have caused a basically new AC to die?

Hi, all it said was after 16 uses you stored it in your closet. When you re-installed it the next summer, you were cut off? I bet you were going to say it didn't work. Let me ask you this, did you happen to lay it on its side for any time at all? If you set it on end or on its side for the winter, it will never run again. What happens is the oil in the compressor mixes with the freon and runs out of the compressor. When you install it, the compressor has no time at all for the oil to return to the crankcase and you have a burnout. If this is not the problem, could you write me back and explain what has happened for me so I will know what to do? I thank you for this. If I was right, then the unit is no good, and wouldn't be worth replacing the compressor compared to buying a new one. Please let me know.

I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IF YOUR AC UNIT HAS BEEN PLACED IN A POSITION OTHER THAN THE APPROPRIATE, UPRIGHT POSITION, THAT BEFORE YOU EVER TURN THE UNIT BACK ON THAT YOU MUST HAVE IT IN THE UPRIGHT POSITION AND LEAVE THE UNIT OFF FOR ABOUT 24 HOURS SO THAT THE OIL CAN GET BACK DOWN TO THE CRANK CASE WHERE IT BELONGS....IF THIS METHOD IS NOT DONE BEFORE STARTING UNIT THAT IT WILL BURN IT UP!!!!....IT'S BASICALLY THE SAME PRINCIPAL METHOD FOR AN AC WINDOW UNIT AS IT WOULD BE FOR A REFRIGERATOR THAT HAD BEEN LAYING DOWN AND THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO RETURN IT TO ITS STAND UP POSITION, THE CORRECT POSITION OF COURSE, AND LEAVE IT UNPLUGGED FOR ABOUT 24 HOURS BEFORE PLUGGING BACK IN....THIS GIVES THE OIL AND COOLANT TIME TO GET BACK TO THE PROPER PLACE...
