Make sure your feed dog switch has been lowered, and some of the embroidery/sewing convertibles won't work when the foot pedal is inserted into the machine, thus the slow sewing speed. Reverse should only be available when the presser foot is in the up position.
I have had Viking, Pfaff, Brother, BabyLock. and the above facts are true for most of them.

The Bernina 180 is an older vintage computerized machine with a few things going against it due to age and technological issues with its older computer system. The machines were not made to run for extended lengths of time like the newer models, so experiencing problems at this point is not unusual.
Over lubrication and lubrication in general, predictably becomes problematic over time with switching devices such as the reverse button. Oil film eventually covers the machines mechanisms in its entirety, thus causing the carbon contacting pads to actuate intermittently or fail permanently.
Other problems can occur in the machine that affect the free running state of the machine so that the mechanical overload sensing mechanism will only allow the machine to run for a few stitches and then shut down. This is a protective device to keep the power supply from becoming damaged.
With that in mind, I would look at the simplest things first before going further.
1. Remove the embroidery device and see if the machine will sew normally with the foot control as well as checking the reverse button. (This check determines if the problem resides in the basic machine function or in the embroidery unit/embroidery mode. If that works normally, go to the next step....
1. Attach the foot control and again see if the machine runs. If the machine runs, then it is most likely a reverse button problem requiring a replacement.
2. 2. Turn the hand-wheel to determine if it is free, which is to say that no undue resistance to tuning is appreciable as compared to normal turning resistance. If the hand-wheel turns harder than normal, there can be any number of bushing type of bearings including belt tensioning idlers that are dry. These would need lubrication or replacement. This also requires technical repair. 3. Make sure that the hoop is installed properly. After selecting a pattern, go to (Layout), and then to (Check) to see if the proper hoop size and fitting are correct.

Can you describe your problem a bit better.
From what you describing it sounds like the machine does start to embroider, it starts slow then it stops.
It is normal when you first start to embroider that the machine runs very slowley, does just a few stitches and stops. This is normal and all Berninas do this. The machine stops after these first few embroidery stitches so you can cut off the extra piece of thread. Cut off the extra thread then push the reversing button again and the machine should start to embroider. It will stop again if a color change is needed. This information is provided in your owners manual.
Make sure you have lowered the feed dogs for embroidery and there is no need to have the foot control attached for embroidery though it won't affect anything if it is attached to the machine...
