The bushings in Gold Medal Cross bars should not be removed. Could you mean the Set collars?
I have had kettles where I have had to hammer the agitator out of the crossbar pretty heavily. Carbon from the oil can get up in there and lock it into place. Place the crossbar in a bench vice to support the sides close to the center, but not tightened. Be sure to use a piece of wood(you will destroy the scrap wood in the process) between the hammer and the agitator shaft to prevent damaging the agitator shaft.
