We fixed this same problem as a dyi project. Check out www.tvrepairkits.com. The kit itself come with the proper chips, fuses, and very detailed instructions which includes pictures. They also have online help if you have questions. If you know how to solder and are a very careful person, this is something that you can fix yourself.
The convergence ics have gone bad. it is not a diy project. seek professional help. check for more on www.fixurtvs.com.
Most rear projection tv sets other than RCA use two Ior one STK IC(s) that look like large black trapezoid mounted on aluminum heatsinks with around 20 pins, YOU CAN replace the bad ICs by simply desoldering of the connections put in new one and soldering. Though due care and skills are required. But RCA units have basically several transisters on the convergence board instead of the simple 2 STKs. You will need a suitable multimeter to test each transistor seperately and that may require you to desolder them from the board so to get an acurate measurement. There are a dozen or more transistors on the baord all with HEATSINKS which makes it easier to identify them. You may use a magnifying glass and lots of light to look for small cracks in the old solder..and resolder them This is not considered an easy fix even for the techs. In addition, there is a possibility that a resistor or diode, or something somewere else may be at fault. You can check with your repair guy and refer the solution # 1 above for parts. Repairs need professional techs and internet encourages many hobbiest to call themselves professionals and do just easy simple repairs and stay away from tricky ones. Well, its okay to change if the repairs are not feasible in your area. Thanks for visiting www.fixurtvs.com.
