All white pic is shown on LCD when used in Manual Mode with delayed shutter timer
Hi, my camera has been working great for over a year. Today while trying to get some storm pictures I set the shutter delay time and took a picture in Manual Mode (M) the pic was all white. All of the other modes on the camera work perfectly fine. I'm guessing I screwed some setting up.

Dave e mtb is right to tell you're overexposing the shot, the Nikon D40x and most Nikon SLR's have a WhiteBalance feature which lets you increase or decrease the exposure w/o modifying the shutter or aperture.
Look for a push button labeled "WB" on the back or elsewhere and depress it to read the indicator, when it is "0.0" there is no compensating effects, when it is 0.1 - 5.0 you are adding light and when -0.1 - -5.0 then you are darkening the exposure.
If the WB feature is causing your issue then it is likely reading +2.0 or higher
This is incorrect. White Balance is completely seperate from exposure. It is exposure (sometimes labelleed "EV") not white balance that is causing this.
You are massively overexposing the picture. Manual mode means you have to set the exposure manually. You need to adjust the settings so that the light meter reads somewhere around the zero mark.
M mode is most useful for flash photography where you want a certain level of ambient illumination in the picture as well.
If you want some control over the camera but don't want to worry about exposure too much, use A and S modes. The manual will explain all of these modes.
