The manual says: 4) Charging: Set the ON/OFF switch to the ON position and connect the player to your computer's USB port. It may help to try and reformat the player 'hard drive' if that is possible. If guarantee is up, you could buy a cheap clip type player from china on ebay for a couple of dollars and rip out the lithium cell. Good Luck.
