An air conditioning technician told me that my Carrier XCB183D (9 years old) needs to be replaced (not cooling sufficiently) but that model is no longer available. Is that true?

Thats very likely, they update and come up with more efficient units and discontinue the older models.
The compressor will lose effieciency over time.
