An I\O device error
I have a Maxtor external hard,drive 500. USB plug in and play, BUT when I put it on now it comes up on my laptop as an error D:\ is not acceseble becouse of an I\O device error. how can I resolve this issue. system says device working ok drive updated to correct stage, what now?

The problem is from the harddisk and it have to be reformatted, what you have to do is that when you plug it in, goto my computer and right click on the harddisk you plug in to display the shortcut menu then in the shortcut menu goto format then click it to bring out the format menu then click ok or start when you click it, it will start formatting, after formatting follow the next option.
