I have experienced this problem on a video card of my own awhile back. It was a nvidia card not ati. I did replace my fan and i was ok after that. It can never hurt. However locating a fan is sometimes hard to do. i was able to get mine from nvidia they were nice and only charged me 12.00 plus 4.95 to ship. A good way to tell is will the mac currently boot? if it will boot then after a little bit it hangs i would think a fan would help. I would at least try a fan first. Oh ya it also depends on how long the fan was out if the fan just died then i would say go for it if the fan has been out awhile i would get a new card just my 2 cents :)
