ATI x600 displaying checkerboard pattern when playing games
Older games that SHOULD work fine on this machine are displaying a "checkerboard" pattern. Sometimes the game works fine when I first load it, then the next time I play, the checkerboard pattern appears after the loading screen. This happened with Far Cry, No One Lives Forever and now Freedom Force (which I've run before on lower level computers without problem). I experience these problems no where else (online, other programs).
Specs: Fujitsu Lifebook N6210 Centrino 1.83GHz; ATI Radeon x600(Catalyst driver 9.3 and mobility modded); 75GB drive.
I am getting very frustrated. This should not be happening with a 2005 machine and 2002 games.

Sounds like specific overheating problems that only affect certain game engines or certain functions in them or is may be memory leak that only happens when computer has been running programs for a period of time.
No One Lives Forever uses Lithtech 2.0: Talon engine, however it was later revised to Lithtech 2.2 whose fixes were included in the latest NOLF patch. Make sure you have the latest patch for NOLF.
Freedom Force uses NetImmerse engine.

Far Cry uses CryENGINE. Far Cry was actually developed by Crytek as a technology demo for Nvidia display adapters and when the company saw its potential, it was turned into a game. As a conclusion I would say this game is very likely optimized for Nvidia display adapters and issues may be because of ATI display adapter drivers.
If nothing else helps try somewhere with nVidia. ATI has a lot of issues with old games released before or near year 2000, because of its drivers and they do not seem to correct driver issues on old games. When looking nVidia driver release notes you find more often game specific corrections or maybe they just document them better.
