Automatic braking system no longer works
I replaced both belts on my Toro LX500 riding mower. Now when going downhill the braking system tries to engage but it won't hold the mower back. The mower will run freely out of control downhill and make a quickly repeating "ratcheting noise". What did I do wrong?

Hi there,
- Remove the entire assembly from the tranny.
- Check the brake pucks/pads, and clean the pivot pins and pin holes with a wirebrush and steel wool making sure all the parts are clean and move freely.
- You can use a small drill bit and put some steel wool on the end of the bit and run it through the pin holes to clean the inside of the holes.
Do adjusting the nut on the tranny brake arm. Tightening it increases break pressure.
Reassemble it again.
Let me know
Hi sir
put grease on pulley and try...then friction is reduced
thank u.......
Drive belt should be tight - as the variable part is the spring on the pulley.
normal deflection for the belt should be about 1/4"
Thanks!
Is the drive belt tight?if it is not gight enough it will slip and let the mower run free but if its tight the gears wont let it spin faster than its going. if the belt is tight that means your gears are slipping and that can make a grinding noise also
