black. Can that be the problem? What could I do in this case? Could I take that out to try to clean it? I've read I should check the signal with a Digital Multi Meter. I don't know where to get a not too expensive one, but ok, say I get it: How am I supposed to measure the signal? Where do I connect the two DMM endings? See, I really don't know much... I would take it straight to a repair store but there seem to be none in my area. Thanks a lot for your time and for your help. Best, David
If you are experiencing exactly the same problem with both turntables then the dirty contacts are probably not the problem. You do not say what sort of amplifier you are playing the turntables through. If your audio system / amplifier has a dedicated input for a record turntable (it will be marked PHONO) it may have a switch next to it - move the switch to the MAG (magnetic) position. This will solve your problem. If it is a home audio system or even a disco amp with only an AUX (auxillary) input socket then you will need a PRE-AMPLIFIER to boost the signal from the cartridge to the right level to match the two together. Here is a link to the sort of thing you will need. http://www.richersounds.com/products/accessories/phono-pre-amps Phono Pre-Amps vary enormously in price - I have the Vivanco and it works very well but it will only take one turntable so you would need two of them or a DJ's model with 2 separate channels.
