If this car is a 2004, 2005 or 2006 smart car, here are the instructions in resetting your code...
As said above, turn the ignition on, if you have found the code, If the code is 1553, for example, turn radio on, THEN PRESS THE CD BUTTON. Again, as above, press the first preset station button once and a 1 should appear in the screen , then the next one press 5 times , the next one 5 times as well, then the fourth button 3 times so the code is appearing in the screen. NOW PRESS THE CD BUTTON AGAIN and the radio should come on. Go to our website (asmartcar.com) in the FAQ section to learn how to get your original code (about $25, but cheaper than a new radio) if you are not lucky enough to have your code. You will need your serial number. This information is being added here in case others stumble upon this solution without a code. We also explain how to disable this function if you worry about losing your code in the future. Hope this is helpful. - Ron Gaus, asmartcar.com
Regarding solution number 4. If this is a pre-2008 smart, unfortunately dealers are not able to do this. These cars were not recognized by Mercedes dealerships (or smartUSA dealerships) since they had to be converted from their European design to legal US design. This is ONLY referring to the 2004, 2005 and 2006 model years from Europe. The radios with these features are all Grundig for these smarts. -Ron Gaus, asmartcar.comRegarding solution number 4. I believe you can call the dealer's service personel and give them your VIN number for the car. With the VIN number they should be able to give you the proper code for your radio.
Right firstly look around the car for a 4 figure number written down somewhere like the sun visor or under the boot mat ,anywhere in fact that might not appear obvious. If that turn anything up then remove the radio and look for the radio make and the radio serial number then if i have the right code generator for that model i can find the number from that.Failing which go back to dealer with the chassis number and they will get the number.Sometimes someone may have had the same problem and when you pull the radio out its written on the radio case.Common problem which is why i will write the radio code on the back of the sun visor when i have fitted a new battery or done a repair that has necessitated disconnecting the battery.Their is no magic secret of holding this button in and press that whilst holding the aerial and doing a jig all at the same time
