Hi Barbara: If the engine was running when it broke....very probably yes If you've tried to use the starter........... probably yes These were an excellent vehicle however, considering the age, I would be really concerned about the overall condition and costs of other potential maintenance before I committed to major engine repair costs. My bad, Mitchel does list this as an interference engine. It lists 85--96 1.9L ford escort as interference engine. If somebody has better info than Mitchel, so be it. I saw other databases that said no.
