C Fluctuating Pressures
When i hook up my gauges to the high and low side i have fluctuations in the pressure readings.In the past i have just replaced the unit it self but this time dont have the means to do it.So my question is....Is there anything that i can try to do before replacement??

I dont know what you mean by fluctuating. Do you mean small bounces? If so that can indicate non condensables like water in the line. It could be an indication of a weak compressor.
If they are slowly increasing and decreasing then the refrigerant levels could be the cause as well as a weak compressor. As 22 Yooper said. Make sure you are checking based on the superheat target pressures.
Most Central air conditioning systems are what is termed "A Critical Charged system". Ambient temperatures also affect the pressure reading in the system. Every time you attach a set of gages to a system you will loose some of the charge even if minimal. A set of gages in the hands of someone who does not fully understand the inner working principles of the system could be dangerous to both the system and to the individual in person. To balance a system charge the superheat method is the best. This must also take into consideration the ambient temperature at the time of the procedure. A low superheat at a lower ambient temperature will cause a liquid flood back to the compressor under higher ambient conditions.
