Camera freezes up, screen turns black, red light stays on and I am forced to remove the battery to power it off. My firmware is updated, I re- formatted the memory card, bought a new memory card, reset everything to factory settings and nothing seems to work

What lens are you using? There might be issues with the contacts, therefore - using a dry clean, non abrasive cloth, try wiping the contacts on the lens - as well as the camera body. and see what that does.
