Can you sucessfully convert a Dayton Model 3E3686, serial# Q9353703, overhead, Natural Gas heater to propane? The orfices that are in it now are about .0045". I used a spark plug feeler gauge (round) to get an approximate size. The .0044" did not pass through snugly but had very little movemen in the orface.
A HVAC friend was to have converted it to propane. He changed the main valve, as there was some sort of problem there. I would have him make any needed adjustments, but he has cancer that is very serious and I believe that he is unable to work, at the present. I contacted another technician. He said to check the orfice size on the heater, which I did, as stated. Most of the burners burn blue but one burns very orange and another is on the orange side, but not as much. I had to clean the carbon from the burner that was burning orange. It was built-up above the V-shaped portion of the burner with soot, carbon - whatever it is. The other one had a little build-up on it but very little - compaired to the worst one. The others were pretty clean. The air adjustment, near the orfice, on the burners are full-open.
The tech that workerd on it said that he would have to come to adjust the regulator on the tank to make it correct. I Don't have a gauge to check pressure near the furnace, but could purchase one. I had one and an electric shut-off valve near the tank, on a boat that I had, at one time.
Bottom line - can this heater be made to burn good? Are burners available, that were desidned for propane - if needed? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
