Can you tell me what the sender unit on the top of the thermosat housing on a Daihatsu Rocky 1994 RV TURBO DIESEL is for. I know it's not for the engine temp

Its for the water temperature.the water thermostat housing, and the water thermostat. it can be replaced if it gets faulty.To install: NOTE Make sure all of the gasket surfaces are free of all gasket material. Make sure the tabs on the engage properly into slots in thermostat housing.
Install the thermostat housing bolts, thermostat housing and the thermostat.
Connect the upper radiator hose and the heater coolant hose to the thermostat housing.
Connect the water temperature indicator sender unit and the engine coolant temperature sensor electrical connectors.
Fill the cooling system with Premium Engine Coolant or equivalent meeting you cars specification in a 50/50 mixture with water.
Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
Stop the engine. Top off coolant recovery reservoir as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

and yes this is also to turn on the fan. the fan is computer controlled
