I wonder if you have Windows Mobile Device Center running, as well as Outlook (for calendar, contacts, tasks and e-mail synchronization) installed on your PC. With it checked it tries to connect and then WMDC shows error at the bottom left where it said connecting when trying. So, you seem to get some effect, after all. Have you already tried to uninstall and reinstall WMDC?
