Hi Paula,
Your routers default settings are to setup your wireless network without encryption so you can connect to it out of the box. However, as i'm sure you know, it's very insecure. To remedy this, we can enable encryption on your router. You'll need to log into the router to do this, and I would recommend doing this from a computer that is wired into the router, and not connected wirelessly (Since you'll be making changes to the wireless part).
Start by opening up Internet Explorer, and the going to this address: (http://192.168.0.1). It will ask you for a username and password to connect. If you haven't changed them yet, then the defaults are admin/password for the username/password, respectively. For a step by step tutorial, check out portforward.com. While the instructions they offer are not exactly for you, they will get you as far as logging into the router. Once you are in the router, you'll need to find the wireless button on the left, and enter your custom network name. A wireless network name is also known as an SSID. Just change it to whatever you'd like. Also, you should enable encryption. There are two types you can do. WEP is more secure than nothing, but not as secure as the alternative WPA. Try enabling WPA, and set your passphrase as any password you'd like to. Once you hit apply, it will change the name of the wireless network(SSID) to whatever you provded before, and will now ask for a password to connect to your network.
Please comment back if you are stuck on any steps. Also, you can ask for expert help, and i'm sure it'll be easily setup for you. Perhaps we can do a screen sharing session to setup this for you.
