I took mine apart and poured CLR solution (Calcium Lime Rust remover) in the tray until the heating element was covered. Let it sit for several hours. If some scale is still there, use an old toothbrush to rub over the heating element (don't use anything abrasive). Rinse well and reassemble the unit.

Mix a 50/50 solution of White Vinegar and Bottled Distilled Water (enough to fill the tank). Pour the solution in and let it sit for 30 minutes, Then start the humidifier and let it run until almost all of the solution has been used. Turn the unit OFF, empty the remaining solution and fill the tank with Bottles Distilled Water. Turn the unit ON and run for 30 minutes. This will flush out any of the remaining solution. The remaining water should be disposed of and in the future, use Bottled Distilled Water, rather than tap water. That way you will not have to worry about calcium and mineral build up at all. Plus, the mist that's generated will be totally void of any harmful minerals.
Hope this helped you solve the cleaning issue. Please let me know. Thanks!
