Car wont start by ignition, have to start with wire , now when i start it it keep trying to turn over , JUst help
Lately i ahve been haveing to jump the car with a with touching some part of the starter ( and it starts) Can't get it to start by the key , then yesterday when i was starting my car . i got it started but even after it was started it kept trying to turn over and over . ( THis contiued long after i took the key out of the ignition. Before i got to the battery to disconnect it, there was slight smoke coming from the starter. Anything would help me out . I have the money just need to know what i need to purchase ( Replaced the starter not even a year ago, and it drove fine for the longest time. So i cant see that being the problem.

The first thing you need to do is trouble shoot why the ignition isn't sending the signal to the starter. This could be either a bad ignition switch, bad neutral safety switch, or bad part of the harness. The easiest way to do this is to hook a test light to the small post on the starter solenoid and this will tell you when the starter receives the 12v signal from the key. Now you can test the ignition switch to make sure that you have a 12v source, and that the switch is sending the 12v out when in the crank position. Then test that the neutral switch has the 12v signal and that it is sending it thru when in park or neutral. Another thing to look for is if your car has any fuseable links. Having the starter stuck and cranking for an extended period of time definitely pulls alot of amps and can burn up links. You can pull the starter and have it tested at any national parts store, I believe I would plan on changing it.
