Card not allowing more then 640x480 and 4bit colors
I recently got a 'hand-me-down' Dell 2400. I replaced the RAM and have put in a new DVD drive, and picked out this video card so that it would be usable for me and my school work - any maybe a couple of old [old] school games.
Anyway, I install the card/drivers [have done both off the CD and newest from website with a system restore] and although the card works fine during boot and while playing in the BIOS, the issue comes when XP loads. It switches back to the on-board, and when I try to set the Geforce as the "Primary" card I can only get very low, unusable settings.
After what I have researched my thoughts are that the stock power supply isn't enough: 200w. Looking at newegg [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133233&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-] specs I am guessing that the 200w power supply isn't enough for the card[?].
So my question is am I right in assueming the power supply is the issue here?
I don't mind investing in a replacement, as the recommened one still keeps me within my budjet on this computer [not spending more then $200 bucks]. I just would like to ask someone who would know better then me if this is the issue.
Spec:
Card trying to use: NY VCGFX522PEB Geforce FX 5200 256mb 128-bit DDR PCI
In Dell 2400:
P4 2.4gig
1gig ram

Not sure what other specs needed.
thanks!

If you have the option to disable on-board VGA on BIOS do it for test.
To check if you have enough power please try to boot with your CD/DVD dirves and extra HDD off.
should I give that a try before I invest money into a new power supply?
I think that is better to double check your card, with everything
unplugged but HDD, it should work. Anyway 200w PSU tight to your
system... Can you get a PSU form a fiend for tests?
