Does it not acknowledge dvd disc only or cd or dvd both. If it doesn't read the dvd disc, or able to play dvd disc, but able to exlpore regular cd's, then you have a codec error, and you need to download a dvd codec like powerdvd for it for your system to play dvd disc. Check to see if your dvd-rom drive appears in the "my computer" window, if it is there, but wouldn't be able to play anything, then it could be a driver issue. so make sure in the hardware , the drivers is installed and working properly. If it is working properly and driver is installed, then you got a bad drive, the optical laser lenses isnt reading or the spindle ain't working anymore if you don't hear disc being loaded when inserting the disc.
Even with new computer, things can break, however the true story to it is that you took it to the tech, and they probraly screwed with it somehow. Now you mentioned that it plays cd such like audio files and now dvd right? Alright in the "my computer" see what drive windows is displaying in the icon for exm " DVD RoM (d:)". If it says that it is a dvd rom, then you still have a dvd rom You can right click on the Dvd or your optical rom (uner device removable propertie) and select propertie and the hardware tab. . The it show you what dvd-cd rom it has and if the device is working properly. A dvd/cd rom combo will still be able to play dvd and cd disc. Now the only thing I am afraid of is, they took out your dvd-drive and only gave you a cd-drive... and in that case you gotta beef with them.Even with new computer, things can break, however the true story to it is that you took it to the tech, and they probraly screwed with it somehow. And I Quote " Now the DVD play back on the CD drive, which would only play audio prior to taking it to the tech" So what you are saying is that you can play Dvd movies right, but no piciture but you can hear the audio??? If so, and you have already check "In my computers" and under the "device with removable storage" that it does display for exm "Dvd Rom or Dvd-Rw Rom (D:)" which is stating that you do have a DVD rom, if you don't see that and it only says Cd-Rom then you can't play dvd, however if it does say dvd rom, then you have a codec issue. First what location are you from??? It could be that you are playing dvd with wrong region too, I had people that had that promblem with branded computers like compaq, hp etc that couldn't play a region 4 on a region 1... But anyways back to the subject, if you can hear audio, but no picture, then 98% is not with your dvd-rom but with you codes. You need to install a dvd code into the computer in order for you to play dvd movies. So please download a dvd codec, a good one ishttp://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Co... and download and install, then restart your computer and see if then can play dvd's. If it works, let me know. And I Quote " Now the DVD play back on the CD drive, which would only play audio prior to taking it to the tech" So what you are saying is that you can play Dvd movies right, but no piciture but you can hear the audio???
