Changing shocks on a 1979 volswagen
Bought a 1979 westfalia volkswagen restored and they had installed air shocks which made it a ''hard ride'' so I took it in to a volkswagen shop have them replaced with hydraulic shocks. They were not able to get them out...I don't know why...in the process they stripped a bolt that attached one of the shocks to the (I guess the chassis...don't know if it was top or bottom) and then just ''set it in'' told me I needed to get it repaired by a alignment and frame shop, and the bolt holding one of the rear shocks to the chassis came out...can't drive it now as it is banging against the body some where..Have a friend who rebulids cars who will assist me in repairing it but he asked me to try and get the schematics for the 1979 Westfalia Volkswagen Chassis so he could do this...at least a temporary ''fix'' so I can go on my trip. I can't find the schematics myself online...if you can help me it would be appreciated

Hi, this is why they make oxy/acet. torches to cut things out. I will look and see what I can come up with. You cant miss that trip, man I would love to go with you,lol. Hang in there.

As of yet, I haven't been able to come up with anything. I would find a shop that has a torch set-up, to cut the old studs off of the air shocks and you should have plenty of room to remove those shocks? I cant see what a big or impossible job this would be to take them out. Or, do it yourself. Rent a torch and cut them right out. If you have the replacement shocks, they will fit with no problems you can't solve, its just removing the air shocks and I can't believe a shop set up to do this told you to take it to a front end or alignment place? That's nuts! I wish you the best my friend, and I am sure you can get this done before trip time. Its only the 5th, and it shouldn't even take a full day to do this job. Keep me posted, roll up your sleeves, get a torch and show them mechanics how its done. Let me know the outcome would you please.
