Disconnect the battery cables before removing the starter. Remove the Positive cable which also is connected to the starter positive connection. Either directly or through a solenoid. You have to remove the bolt that holds the positive to be able to completely remove the starter. in other words it may still have a bolt holding it tight. (3 bolts)
Volvo starters have unusually high problems with the connector cables. Check all the wiring going to the starter. Including the cable negative wire. I have heard of cases where the starter is removed and the car still does not start . This is because of a bad connection somewhere between the battery, ground, and the starter.
