One of the most common causes for a "check engine light" is caused by an fuel evaporation sensor. This can be caused by a loose or defective fuel filler cap. Make sure that the fuel cap is tight.
You can take the vehicle to any Autozone and they will connect it to an "ODB II" (On Board Diagnostics) to read and interpret it for you. There's no charge. If it is the evap system, I'd have them reset the code and see if it comes back on. If it does, there's some defective hose, canister, or other part that needs serviced or replaced.
