The factory book covers this, how to get DTC errors out of all TCM in all cars, in later hears, PCM can do this direct, using OBD2. is car usa car what drive line does it have, ? engine and trans, is it 4wd, we can see your car, nor guess, drivelines,(called factory options new) cant. Plug in a scan tool if the scan tool shows p700 only an no other codes, that means you must use jumper clip to get TCM flash codes.(generic answer) DO YOU HAVE, TOD, option, torque on demand 4wd? i cant see that either, look at cluster see funny 4wd complex graphics there, bingo for TOD< and has its own rules of diagnosis.
here is what the book says about car with A/T 1998 and with dash light marked, CHeck trans. it shows that the PCM in your car (its not an ECU) shifts this trans. so that means scan the pcm , just like all new cars, using any OBD2 scan tool made. in USA> scan it. see all PCM (internal Tcm it has) there is a dash trans overtemp light too.
there is no TCM (in its own box here) nor flash codes from same, this car has the integrated system. called PCM why not just drive to any shop and get it scanned first. get the codes , and post those. just like we do on all cars 96 + no now. Trans fluids. well the operators guide tells you how to check it, hot, in park and running. do not check it like any manual box or engine. do not overfill it and wreck your trans, do not. do not guess, learn to do it the correct way and win. IMO. if the levels are ok and filter clean, inside, and the fluid dont look like tar, normal is pink, red, maroon or muddy red. (new is pink) black ,dark brown is suspect, sniff it , if it smells sweet good, if smells burnt, NOT. and ATF that is sparkly with metals flakes, is doom city.

Most of these use the check trans light to show codes, so if you know how to do the trans "handshake" the light will flash to show you what is wrong.
