Cleaning the battery contacts
My camera wouldn't work for the longest time, then I read your suggestion, and it worked again!...for like 30 seconds. I'm assuming that MUST be the problem, since it wouldn't work at all before.
Is there some sort of chemical you used to clean it???

I would use a contact cleaning pen - these use no chemicals, just a glass fibre brush. Keep well away from your skin though! You can buy them in tool shops.
