Code 23 dodge caravan My van was making noise when i drove it. Then it seemed like it was having trouble going into gear. After driving it for an hour, I noticed my engine oil was completely empty. Then the check engine soon light came on. The code for it is "23". The noise got worse. Then i finally put 3 quarts of engine oil in it. The noise went down, but not completely. When i push the pedal down when the car is parked, the engine makes a rattling noise. I would like to know if I keep driving my van, will the check engine light disapear on it's own? Also I'd like to know if you think i already damaged parts of my engine due to the low oil? Our mechanic told us that we need to replace the transmission. But we found out that he never checked the engine oil level. Am i doomed or do I have a chance saving my car with a small amount of money? Also is it safe to keep driving my car?
You are doomed. That rattle you are hearing are your bearings that have spun, because of oil starvation. The engine is damaged and is not safe to drive because it could throw a connecting rod thru the engine block which will throw oil on the pavement causing you to skid out of control. This will be costly to fix! A engine rebuild or engine replacement will have to be done.
