Same problem happened with me. I called customer support at hp and was on the phone with them for 40 minutes. First the support agent collected all of my contact information and the serial number of the printer. He registered the printer online for me as well as I didnt do that when I had bought the printer 3 months ago. The support agent had me run through the standard troubleshooting tasks such as replacing the ink cartridges with the old one I had, going to the tools section of the printer and selecting "clean print heads" and "align printer". He even had me plug the printer directly into a wall socket as opposed to a power strip. Unplugged for 20 seconds to reset, ect. Point is he had me run through everything.
When black ink still failed to print he escalated the call to a technical supervisor who came on. Cindy was very helpful and told me they would be shipping me a new replacement printer. She also said that I have 15 days from the time of receiving the new one to ship my old one back to them and that a return mailing label would be provided (hopefully paid for as well). My printer was under manufacturer warranty and she said that the new printer would reset the warranty time from the day I receive it. However the replacement printer that would normally be sent within 5-7 days was out so now Im not expected to get my replacement for 20 days.
Overall my experience with hp's customer support was pretty good. I do feel its ridiculous that my printer broke within 3 months and considering I barely used it. All of the ink cartridges I have are made in china or Malaysia. Whether this is a sign of poor quality control or not, who knows. I bought this printer because it was highly recommended by reviews on the internet; I should have been skeptical anyway. Good luck with your problem. Here is their tech support number: 800-474-6836.
Yes, if yours is wireless, then log into it's IP and then it will not only tell you if there are any issues, but you can clean your printer cartridges wirelessly. If you hook it up to USB, download the software for it, and you can "open print queue" then click "options and supplies" and then hit "utility" and it will diplay the option to clean your printer cartridges
