Color Laserjet 2550 Loud Noise when starting up and printing
It started to make a sort of groaning noise once in awhile but it still printed. Now it makes a very loud long noise as it starts up and it goes on for 30-40 seconds. It still prints but it sounds very bad as if something is caught or maybe needs oil. I don't want it to break down and not work. Any ideas? HP was no help said it was out of warranty. Thank you. It is worse when printing from the manual feed tray.

Remove toner cartirdge and check gears on cart as well as all of the gears you can see inside the unit for any signs of wear. You may also need to remove the fuser assembly and perform the same task with the gears back there. MAKE SURE THE POWER HAS BEEN TURNED OFF AND THE PRINTER UNPLUGGED FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO TOUCH THE FUSER. IT WILL BE HOT!!! Most frequently these kinds of noises from the printer are due to gears slipping. Sometimes simply reseating the fuser assembly or toner cartridge will fix it. If there appears to be excessive wear on any of the gears, you will need to replace them.
I replaced my imaging drum and it no longer makes the loud groaning noise.
Thanks for your comment, How do you replace the drum? Thanks again Di
I've just had a similar problem with a grinding noise. But the printing was bad. It turned out that the roller gears on the black toner cartridge would not move. In spite of taking the end off the cartridge and blowing it out, I could not find out why, so I replaced the cartridge.
